FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Degrees in Ireland
Education in the Republic of Ireland is governed by Acts of Parliament promulgated by the Houses of the Oireachtas.
Education by the main universities is governed by Acts which specifically deal with the National University of Ireland, University College Dublin, University College Maynooth, University College Cork, University of Limerick and Dublin City University. Each of these universities is chartered to issue their own degrees. These universities are not accredited from any other body or institution.
The Acts of the Oireachtas also promulgated legislation which governs education provided by Institutes of Technology. These institutes provide education which leads to educational awards by the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC).
Since the mid-nineties, independent colleges have set up in Ireland. Some of them are affiliated to overseas universities and issue degrees from these universities. Others have sought accreditation from HETAC for their programmes. The accreditation of these independent programmes is provided for in the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999. Independent providers, who elect not to be accredited with HETAC can issue their own awards. Many of the independent colleges accredited to HETAC issue their own awards in addition to meeting the criteria for HETAC awards. There is no prohibition in the educational acts which restrict the awarding of degrees by independent colleges. These degrees are not HETAC accredited degrees.
Degrees issued by Warnborough College (Ireland) are in this category and these degrees are legal. They have no relation to HETAC or its accreditation.
Warnborough adheres to the Principles of Best Practice for Cross-Border Higher Education as recommended in 2004 by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the International Association of Universities (IAU), and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).
